The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of more than 8,500 iStore Magnetic Wireless Power Banks sold in the United States due to severe safety hazards. These portable charging devices, equipped with lithium-ion batteries, were sold between February 2023 and May 2025 for $46 to $65. They were widely available in airport vending machines, retail stores, and on iStore’s website.
The recall affects only model number IST-09991/W05, a compact unit measuring approximately 3-by-2 inches. According to the CPSC, the batteries inside the recalled power banks can overheat while charging, leading to potential fires, explosions, and burn injuries.
Three incidents have already been reported, including one involving a consumer who suffered a burn injury on their arm. Another incident resulted in approximately $15,000 in property damage.
The iStore recall is part of a larger trend, as similar products from Anker, Baseus, iWALK, and Casely have also been recalled for similar risks in recent months.
Lithium-ion batteries have become standard in many consumer electronics, including smartphones, laptops, scooters, e-bikes, and portable chargers. While they are highly efficient and capable of holding a charge for extended periods, they also pose a known fire and explosion risk when they malfunction.
These batteries operate using flammable electrolytes and can enter a thermal runaway state when overheated or punctured. A chain reaction of heat generation can rapidly escalate, often resulting in fires or small explosions. This is especially dangerous in confined areas, such as airplane cabins, cars, or homes.
In the case of iStore’s recalled power banks, overheating occurred during the charging process. While the CPSC has not released a definitive technical explanation, defective internal circuitry or poor battery insulation are possible causes.
The Transportation Security Administration has reinforced restrictions on carrying lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage, and many airlines now ban use of portable chargers inside carry-on bags during flights.
So far, the iStore recall has been linked to three serious incidents:
Although these are the only documented cases in the recall notice, many incidents involving similar portable power banks go unreported or are not immediately traced back to the defective device.
Other companies facing similar issues include:
These repeated product failures raise concerns about manufacturing quality, product testing, and regulatory oversight in the portable charger market.
The CPSC has issued the following guidance for consumers:
Once received, the company will process a full refund. However, the CPSC has warned consumers not to dispose of these devices in the trash or regular recycling bins. Instead, they must be taken to a household hazardous waste facility that accepts lithium-ion products.
Failing to dispose of the batteries properly can pose environmental risks and spark fires in waste processing plants or landfills.
When a product causes harm due to a manufacturing or design defect, victims may pursue legal action under product liability law. In the case of the iStore recall, multiple legal theories may apply:
Injured consumers can file lawsuits against the product manufacturer (iStore), its parent company (if applicable), and potentially third-party distributors or retailers if they failed to act responsibly after learning about the hazard.
Victims may seek compensation for:
Suffering an injury from a recalled product can quickly turn into a complicated situation. Insurance companies may attempt to minimize your claim, and large corporations often have legal teams working to deflect liability.
A personal injury attorney can help by:
Time is also critical. Statutes of limitation vary by state, and waiting too long to act may forfeit your right to pursue compensation.
