What Parker Waichman LLP Found

  • 112,932 bottles are affected nationwide, including 200-count, 500-count, and 1,000-count bottles.
  • Consumer complaints involved discolored tablets, according to the FDA recall information.
  • The recall began September 18, 2026, and the FDA had not yet assigned a recall classification at the time of the current listing.
  • Specific lot numbers are affected, so owning Amazon Basic Care acetaminophen does not automatically mean a consumer possesses recalled medication.
  • A potential lawsuit requires more than showing the medication was recalled. An injured consumer generally needs evidence connecting the allegedly defective product to an actual injury and resulting damages.

More than 112,000 bottles of Amazon Basic Care Extra Strength Acetaminophen have been recalled across the United States after consumer complaints involving discolored tablets. The voluntary recall involves 500-milligram acetaminophen caplets manufactured for the Amazon-branded product and distributed nationwide through Amazon.com Services LLC. Aurobindo Pharma USA initiated the recall on September 18, 2026. According to FDA recall information, 112,932 bottles are included across 200-count, 500-count, and 1,000-count packages.

The FDA has not yet classified this recall as Class I, Class II, or Class III. That distinction matters. A recall identifies a problem serious enough for products to be removed or corrected, but it does not by itself establish that a particular medication caused an injury. Consumers who believe they became ill after taking acetaminophen from an affected bottle should preserve the medication and packaging, seek appropriate medical care, and document what happened.

For people who suffered an injury that may be connected to a recalled product, the investigation may extend beyond the recall announcement itself. Potential product liability claims can involve manufacturing records, testing, complaint histories, distribution records, the circumstances that caused the discoloration, and evidence establishing whether the alleged defect actually caused the consumer’s injury.

Which Amazon Acetaminophen Products Are Being Recalled?

The recall concerns Amazon Basic Care Extra Strength Acetaminophen containing 500 mg of acetaminophen per caplet. The official drug labeling identifies Amazon.com Services LLC as the packager and describes the product as an over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer. The product is ordinarily described as white to off-white.

The largest portion of the recall involves 90,456 bottles containing 500 caplets. These bottles have NDC 72288-692-50 and UPC 1 95515 04890 3. The affected lots are:

  • ACD124036A and ACD124030A, expiration September 30, 2027;
  • ACD124042A, expiration October 31, 2027;
  • ACD124048B, expiration November 30, 2027; and
  • ACD125010A, expiration February 29, 2028.

The recall also includes 14,640 bottles containing 200 caplets. Those bottles carry NDC 72288-692-20, UPC 1 95515 04887 3, lot ACD125040A, and an expiration date of September 30, 2027.

Another 7,836 bottles containing 1,000 caplets are included. Those bottles carry NDC 72288-692-01, UPC 1 95515 04888 0, lot ACD124048A, and an expiration date of November 30, 2027.

Consumers should compare all available identifiers rather than relying only on the appearance of the bottle. Other acetaminophen products and package sizes are sold under the Amazon Basic Care name, and the current recall does not mean that every Amazon acetaminophen product has been recalled.

Why Were The Acetaminophen Caplets Recalled?

The stated reason for the recall is discoloration following consumer complaints involving discolored tablets. At this stage, publicly available recall information does not establish precisely what caused the discoloration or whether the discoloration represents contamination, degradation, a manufacturing deviation, a storage-related problem, or another quality issue.

That uncertainty is significant from both a consumer-safety and potential litigation standpoint. Visible changes in medication can justify investigation because pharmaceutical products are manufactured under detailed standards intended to control identity, strength, quality, and purity.

Federal current good manufacturing practice regulations require scientifically appropriate specifications, standards, sampling plans, and testing procedures. Under 21 C.F.R. § 211.160, laboratory controls must be designed to ensure drug products conform to appropriate standards of identity, strength, quality, and purity. 21 C.F.R. § 211.165 further requires appropriate laboratory determination that each batch conforms to final specifications before release for distribution.

These regulations do not establish that a violation occurred in this recall. They do, however, illustrate why the source of an unexpected physical change can become an important part of an investigation.

What Does A Drug’s Discoloration Mean?

Consumers should not attempt to determine the chemical cause of discoloration themselves. A tablet that looks different does not automatically establish that it is contaminated or dangerous, and the FDA’s current recall information has not identified a specific contaminant or announced a particular medical condition caused by these recalled tablets.

From a quality-control perspective, however, an unexpected physical change warrants attention. Drug manufacturers operate under regulations governing production controls, testing, batch review, complaint handling, storage, and other aspects of pharmaceutical production.

Under 21 C.F.R. § 211.192, unexplained discrepancies and failures of a batch or its components to meet specifications must be thoroughly investigated. Importantly, that obligation can extend to other batches of the same drug and other products that may be associated with the discrepancy.

Federal regulations also address consumer complaints. 21 C.F.R. § 211.198 requires manufacturers to maintain complaint records and provides for investigations when a complaint concerns a possible failure of a drug product to meet its specifications. When an investigation is conducted, records must include its findings and follow-up.

Those records can become significant if litigation later develops over whether a product defect existed, when a company learned about the problem, how broadly the problem extended, and what was done in response.

What Should Consumers Do If They Have Recalled Acetaminophen?

The first step is to identify the product accurately. Check the bottle’s NDC, UPC, lot number, package size, and expiration date against the recall information.

If the bottle matches an affected product, consumers should avoid making assumptions about whether taking the medication has harmed them. People with questions about continued medication use or possible health consequences should speak with a physician, pharmacist, or other qualified health care provider. FDA consumer guidance recommends checking the medication’s lot number against the recall notice and following the specific recall instructions.

Someone who believes an injury occurred after using recalled medication should also consider preserving evidence. Do not discard the bottle, remaining caplets, label, packaging, purchase documentation, or communications concerning the recall if a legal claim may be investigated.

For medication purchased online, relevant evidence can include the Amazon order history, confirmation emails, payment records, shipment information, photographs of the bottle and tablets, and any notice received concerning the recall. Medical records showing when symptoms began, laboratory findings, treatment, hospitalization, and the patient’s medication history can also become important.

Why Preserving The Actual Medication May Matter In A Lawsuit

In a pharmaceutical product liability case, identifying the specific product used by the injured person can be critical. The bottle can establish the NDC, lot number, expiration date, manufacturer or distributor information, and other identifying details. Remaining tablets may potentially be available for testing if testing becomes appropriate during an investigation.

This is especially important when the alleged defect has not yet been publicly identified. A person should not alter, clean, transfer, or otherwise unnecessarily handle tablets being preserved as potential evidence. Photographs can document their appearance, but photographs are not necessarily a substitute for the physical product.

Purchase records may provide another layer of product identification. Because the recalled medication was distributed through Amazon, electronic order histories may help establish when a bottle was purchased and shipped. That information can potentially be compared with manufacturing and distribution information obtained during litigation.

What Must Be Proven In A Recalled Medication Injury Case?

One of the central issues is causation. A claimant may have to establish that the relevant recalled medication was used and that the alleged defect was a factual and legally sufficient cause of the injury.

That inquiry can become complicated when a consumer has underlying medical conditions, takes several medications, or experiences symptoms that have multiple possible causes. Medical records, diagnostic testing, treating physicians, toxicological evidence, pharmaceutical testing, and other scientific evidence may therefore become important.

Damages must also be established. Depending upon applicable state law and the facts, recoverable losses could potentially include medical expenses, future treatment costs, lost income, diminished earning capacity, pain and suffering, and other losses caused by the injury. Severe cases can involve hospitalization, continuing medical monitoring, rehabilitation, or long-term treatment.

If a death is allegedly connected to a defective medication, wrongful death and survival claims may also be considered under the law of the applicable state.

Amazon Acetaminophen Recall Lawsuit FAQs

Do I Automatically Have A Lawsuit If I Bought Recalled Amazon Acetaminophen?

No. Purchasing a recalled product does not necessarily establish a personal injury claim. A potential claimant generally needs to establish an injury, an actionable defect or other legal basis for liability, causation connecting the product to the injury, and legally recoverable damages. The specific requirements depend on the law governing the case.

The recalled bottle can nevertheless be important evidence if you experienced an adverse medical event after taking the medication. Keep the medication, packaging, purchase records, and medical documentation while the circumstances are evaluated.

How Do I Know Whether My Amazon Acetaminophen Is Recalled?

Check the NDC, UPC, lot number, bottle size, and expiration date. The current recall includes specified lots of 200-count, 500-count, and 1,000-count Amazon Basic Care Extra Strength Acetaminophen 500-mg caplets.

Do not rely solely on the Amazon brand name or the fact that the medication contains acetaminophen. Only specified products and lots are covered by this recall.

What If I Took The Recalled Acetaminophen But Have No Symptoms?

The existence of a recall does not mean everyone who took the medication was injured. People concerned about their health or continued medication use should consult a pharmacist or health care provider.

From a litigation perspective, merely taking a recalled drug without an injury generally presents a different legal situation from a claim involving documented physical harm. Available remedies vary by jurisdiction and circumstances.
