For more than a decade, New York City has committed itself to Vision Zero—a policy framework aimed at eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. Officials have pointed to declining pedestrian deaths, newly installed bike lanes, and traffic enforcement cameras as proof that progress is being made. But for thousands of residents each year, the streets are still far from safe.
Between 2022 and 2024, serious injuries from vehicle crashes rose by 10% citywide, with the number of injured pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists all climbing in double-digit percentages. The reality on the ground contradicts official optimism. New Yorkers still report dodging speeding vehicles, avoiding intersections where collisions are common, and feeling increasingly vulnerable whether on foot, on a bike, or behind the wheel.
Each year, more than 3,000 New Yorkers suffer serious injuries due to vehicle crashes. These are not minor scrapes or bruises—these are injuries defined by New York State law as those causing death, disfigurement, or long-term impairment. If you or someone you love has been seriously hurt in a traffic crash in New York City, our national civil litigation law firm is here to help. We represent injury victims and families who have lost loved ones due to unsafe streets, reckless driving, and failed safety reforms.
Data from the New York City Department of Transportation shows that the rise in serious injuries is not evenly distributed across the five boroughs. Some neighborhoods and communities are bearing the brunt of the damage. From 2022 to 2024:
Only Staten Island saw a slight dip in injury numbers during the same time period.
These numbers highlight how the city’s most vulnerable communities—often more reliant on walking or public transit—are also the most exposed to danger. And as vehicle traffic continues to increase post-pandemic, so does the likelihood of more severe collisions.
Whether you live in Queens, the Bronx, or any of the city’s high-risk corridors, you deserve safe passage on the street. When dangerous intersections, poor traffic enforcement, or reckless drivers cause harm, victims have the right to pursue compensation.
On paper, the city has made impressive strides in traffic safety. Lower speed limits, intersection redesigns, red light cameras, and protected bike lanes have all been deployed as part of Vision Zero. In 2025, city officials reported:
But these improvements may not be enough to counteract the growing volume of traffic on New York City streets. Many residents purchased cars during the pandemic and have continued driving, contributing to a surge in vehicle miles traveled (VMT). With more cars comes more congestion, more speeding, and more potential for deadly crashes.
Meanwhile, enforcement gaps remain. Speed camera violations carry only a $50 fine and no license points. Chronic offenders—sometimes with hundreds of violations—face no real consequences. A program that once allowed the city to seize vehicles from repeat offenders was allowed to expire. As a result, some of the most dangerous drivers remain on the road.
Another factor influencing injury rates is the changing nature of what’s on the road. The rise of e-bikes and scooters, particularly among delivery workers, has created new friction points between users of bike lanes and sidewalks. While the actual number of pedestrian injuries caused by e-bikes remains very low—only 37 incidents in 2024—their presence contributes to a feeling of chaos on crowded streets.
At the same time, the growing number of oversized SUVs and electric vehicles, which are heavier than traditional cars, is creating a more dangerous environment for everyone. Heavier vehicles are more likely to cause severe or fatal injuries in a crash. Yet there is little political momentum to regulate their use, despite cities like Paris imposing higher fees for large vehicles.
Cyclists, in particular, are facing an uphill battle. Although 2023 was the safest year on record for pedestrians, it was also one of the deadliest for cyclists in NYC history. E-bike riders now account for the majority of those fatalities, as these faster, heavier bikes share space with slower pedal cyclists in lanes that are often not wide enough for safe cohabitation.
If you or a loved one has suffered a serious injury in a traffic crash, you may be entitled to significant financial compensation through a personal injury or wrongful death claim. New York law allows injury victims to recover damages for:
In many cases, the responsible party may be a reckless driver, a company operating a commercial vehicle, or even a city agency that failed to maintain a safe roadway. Lawsuits can be filed against individuals, employers, and municipalities depending on the facts of the crash.
Victims of traffic violence should act quickly. Evidence such as surveillance footage, traffic signal data, and witness testimony can become harder to obtain over time. Our law firm investigates these cases thoroughly and fights to ensure that victims and their families receive full and fair compensation.
Even in locations where the city has made updates—like daylighting (clearing parked cars near intersections for visibility) or curb extensions—serious crashes still happen. That’s because only a small fraction of NYC’s 40,000 intersections have received improvements.
What’s more, the city continues to exempt itself from state laws that would otherwise ban parking too close to crosswalks, undermining the effectiveness of daylighting efforts. The slow rollout of changes—combined with limited enforcement and ongoing resistance to change in car-dependent neighborhoods—means the most dangerous intersections are often the ones that fall through the cracks.
This is why filing a lawsuit after an injury or fatal crash isn’t just about compensation—it can also shine a light on infrastructure problems and pressure agencies to make long-overdue changes.
