The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a July 2025 recall of Navarro Pecan Holdings, LLC products to a Class I, the agency’s highest-level risk classification, reserved for hazards with a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health outcomes or death. This recall was initiated when over 32,000 pounds of pecans were flagged for potential Salmonella contamination. Since then, the extent and urgency of the issue have intensified due to the nature of the pathogen and the widespread distribution of the products.
Salmonella is particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Infection can result in severe gastrointestinal illness and, in some cases, bloodstream infections that require hospitalization. Navarro’s contaminated pecan products were shipped across five U.S. states—Texas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Jersey—and internationally to Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates. Many of the shipments were destined for commercial food manufacturers and bakeries, raising further concerns about cross-contamination in large-scale production environments.
The pecan recall covers a wide array of pecan products produced between May 15 and June 13, 2025.
These include various grades and cuts of pecans such as:
Each product has specific lot codes and production dates, some in batches of over 1,000 pounds. The extensive distribution and product variety mean that both retail and bulk commercial buyers may unknowingly be in possession of contaminated goods. The FDA has instructed all customers to discard or return the products and sanitize any surfaces that came in contact with the pecans.
Unlike some foodborne illnesses that are neutralized by heat, Salmonella can survive in dry foods like nuts for extended periods. Once introduced into a household or commercial kitchen, it can spread easily through contaminated surfaces and utensils. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include:
For vulnerable populations, the Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and cause sepsis, a life-threatening condition. Hospitalization is often necessary in severe cases, and recovery can be prolonged, especially in those with existing health issues.
When a food manufacturer allows a contaminated product to enter the consumer market, they may be held legally responsible for the harm caused. In the case of Navarro Pecan Holdings, liability may extend to injuries suffered by those who consumed contaminated products or were exposed through cross-contamination.
Claims may involve:
Foodborne illness lawsuits can also serve to improve industry standards by holding negligent companies accountable and pushing for better food safety practices.
If you or a loved one suffered symptoms consistent with Salmonella infection and suspect it may be linked to one of the recalled Navarro pecan products, take the following steps:
Consulting a personal injury attorney familiar with foodborne illness litigation can help you understand your rights and determine whether you have a claim.
Can I sue if I got sick after eating recalled pecans? Yes. If you became ill from a recalled Navarro pecan product, you may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit against the company for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
What if I don’t have the original packaging? Even without the original packaging, you may still pursue a claim if you can show proof of purchase or if your illness aligns with the dates and locations of the recalled batches.
Are businesses like bakeries or restaurants liable if they unknowingly serve contaminated pecans? Liability may depend on whether the business followed proper handling and recall guidelines. They may also have legal claims of their own against the supplier.
How long do I have to file a lawsuit? Each state has its own statute of limitations for product liability and personal injury claims. It is best to consult an attorney as soon as possible to avoid losing your right to file.
