The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded a nationwide recall involving cookie products sold by Jalux Americas, Inc., doing business as J.sweets, to a Class I recall, the most serious designation. This alert indicates a reasonable probability that consuming the recalled cookies could cause life-threatening allergic reactions or death. The issue was discovered during an internal audit, revealing that the cookies contained undeclared milk and tree nuts (almonds and macadamia nuts), both of which are common allergens affecting millions of Americans. This failure to properly disclose allergens on labels puts vulnerable consumers at risk of severe health consequences.
The recall impacts L’espoir cookies containing undeclared milk and Drycapot cookies containing undeclared tree nuts. These products were sold exclusively at J.sweets stores located in Torrance, CA; San Jose, CA; Arlington Heights, IL; and Lynnwood, WA, between May 26 and June 30, 2025, for L’espoir, and between May 31 and June 30, 2025, for Drycapot. No online sales were made. Consumers who purchased products with the best before date of September 26, 2025, should return them for a full refund.
The company has admitted to distribution errors and announced remedial measures, including enhanced label verification and improved allergy-safety protocols during manufacturing and stocking.
Milk allergies affect approximately 6 million Americans, while tree nut allergies affect around 4 million. Both can lead to severe, potentially fatal reactions. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to anaphylaxis, a medical emergency involving:
Even trace amounts of allergens can trigger these reactions in sensitive individuals. The presence of undeclared allergens in widely sold food products creates an unacceptable public health hazard.
