A 20-story residential building in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, New York, partially collapsed on Wednesday morning, prompting a “major emergency” response from the New York Fire Department (FDNY). The incident left a massive scar in the side of the structure and scattered rubble across the street below.
Authorities report that the collapse occurred at approximately 8:13 a.m. at 205 Alexander Avenue near East 135th Street. Early information suggests that an explosion in the building’s chimney system may have triggered the structural failure. Aerial footage shows bricks, air conditioning units, and other debris raining down onto nearby buildings and the street.
The FDNY dispatched firefighters, drones, and rescue dogs to search the debris. Fortunately, officials have not reported any injuries, but residents were evacuated, and nearby streets remain closed.
The building is part of the Mitchel Houses, one of over 300 public housing developments managed by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). For years, NYCHA has faced lawsuits and federal scrutiny over its failure to maintain safe and habitable living conditions.
In 2018, federal prosecutors alleged that NYCHA allowed unsafe housing conditions to persist, including structural issues, broken elevators, and dangerous maintenance lapses. The Bronx building collapse is expected to renew concerns about whether NYCHA took appropriate precautions to protect residents.
Officials from the FDNY, NYCHA, and Con Edison continue to investigate the cause of the collapse. Witnesses reported smoke coming from the roof and described the scene as “terrifying.” Emergency management agencies have cut off the gas supply as a precaution, and a temporary shelter has been set up for displaced residents.
When a public housing authority or property manager fails to ensure structural safety, tenants may pursue Bronx building collapse lawsuits for damages, including:
Experienced New York building collapse attorneys can investigate whether NYCHA or utility companies were negligent in maintaining or repairing the property, potentially placing residents and the public at risk.
