Consumers Warned After Lithium-Ion Battery Explosions Lead to Injuries and Property Damage in Anker Power Bank Recall

Portable power banks are used daily to charge smartphones, laptops, and tablets, often tucked into backpacks, purses, or placed on nightstands. But when these devices malfunction, the results can be devastating. Anker Innovations has issued a nationwide recall of approximately 481,000 lithium-ion battery-powered Anker Power Banks after reports of fire, explosions, injuries, and property damage.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) confirmed that 33 incidents have been reported so far, including four burn injuries and at least one case of significant property loss. The problem stems from overheating lithium-ion batteries, which may ignite or explode without warning. These products were sold in major retail stores and online marketplaces across the U.S., making the risk widespread.

What Products Are Affected in the Anker Recall?

The recall includes several models of Anker Power Banks used to charge a wide variety of electronic devices. The affected models include:

  • Model A1647 – 22.5W output
  • Model A1652 – Magsafe, 7.5W output
  • Model A1257 – 22.5W output
  • Model A1681 – 30W output
  • Model A1689 – 30W output

The power banks were widely available at Best Buy, Target, and online platforms such as Amazon.com, Walmart.com, eBay, AliExpress, and even TikTok shopping portals from August 2023 through June 2025.

Each device has “Anker” engraved on the front and the model number and serial number printed on the back or side. Consumers are urged to stop using these power banks immediately and check the serial number at Anker’s Recall Page.

What Makes Lithium-Ion Batteries Dangerous?

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used because they are lightweight, rechargeable, and powerful. However, they come with risks if manufacturing defects or thermal issues arise. A lithium-ion battery can:

  • Overheat internally, leading to thermal runaway
  • Catch fire or explode with very little warning
  • Cause chemical burns or smoke inhalation injuries
  • Destroy surrounding property such as vehicles, homes, or personal belongings

The batteries used in the recalled Anker models are susceptible to overheating while charging or in standby mode, which is when most fires are reported. Fires linked to battery explosions can be difficult to extinguish and may reignite even after appearing to be under control.

Incidents and Injuries Reported So Far

As of the recall announcement on September 18, 2025, Anker Innovations and the CPSC have confirmed:

  • 33 separate reports of battery explosions or fires
  • 4 minor burn injuries
  • 1 reported case of substantial property damage

Injuries were sustained when power banks ignited during normal use or while charging. Explosions inside vehicles, homes, and near sleeping areas have caused users to suffer not only physical injury but also emotional trauma and property loss.

Given how often these devices are used near beds, couches, or inside cars, the risk to consumers and their families is significant.

What to Do if You Own a Recalled Anker Power Bank

Anker urges all customers to take the following steps:

  1. Stop using the device immediately. Do not charge or store it near flammable materials.
  2. Verify the serial number on Anker’s recall website to determine if your unit is affected.
  3. Take a photo of the device showing the serial number and write “recalled” with a permanent marker.
  4. Submit the photo along with your name and the date to Anker’s support team for a cash refund or an Anker gift card.

Proper disposal is critical. These recalled batteries must not be placed in the trash, street-level recycling bins, or drop-off kiosks. Instead, contact your local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility for instructions, as improper disposal can trigger fires at landfills or recycling centers.

Legal Options for Victims of Power Bank Fires

Victims who suffered injuries or property damage caused by an Anker Power Bank may be entitled to legal compensation. Claims could include:

  • Medical expenses for burns or smoke inhalation
  • Property damage to homes, vehicles, or personal belongings
  • Lost income due to hospitalization or missed work
  • Pain and suffering related to trauma and emotional distress

In product liability claims, manufacturers can be held responsible for:

  • Defective design
  • Manufacturing flaws
  • Failure to warn consumers about risks

Because these products were sold through major U.S. retailers and international sellers, pursuing compensation often requires navigating multiple jurisdictions and corporate layers. Legal guidance is necessary to properly preserve evidence, document damages, and hold the appropriate parties accountable.

Why Legal Representation Matters in Product Recall Cases

Cases involving consumer electronics and battery malfunctions are complex. They often require coordination with:

  • Fire investigators
  • Engineers and battery safety experts
  • Medical professionals
  • Retail supply chain analysts

An individual’s medical bills or property damage may only be the beginning. A national law firm with product liability experience can coordinate technical experts, analyze corporate documents, and pursue the maximum financial recovery for each client.

For consumers who suffered due to recalled Anker products, the manufacturer’s refund offer does not erase the damage already done. Legal claims can recover far more than a $30–$50 refund.
